Oberammergau & the Rhine Valley

Oberammergau & the Rhine Valley

Day 1: London to Remagen
We begin our journey by Eurostar from St Pancras to Brussels, then on to Cologne on the high–speed Thalys train. Under the spires of Cologne cathedral, we transfer to a local train and travel along the banks of the Rhine to Remagen and our 3* hotel for a three night stay.

Day 2: Ahr Valley
Today's included excursion is by local train along the Ahr Valley, a wine-growing region famous in Germany for its secluded, old-world feel. The steep valley sides covered in vines and old walled towns provide a scenic backdrop for our tour, which includes wine–tasting and a horse–drawn carriage ride.

Day 3: Königswinter
Our optional excursion today is to the historic town of Königswinter, on the right bank of the Rhine. Rising above the town is the rocky outcrop known as the Drachenfels – “Dragon’s Cliff” – topped by its romantic ruined castle. A small mountain railway connects Königswinter with the summit of Drachenfels, which offers imposing views over the Rhine.

Day 4: On to Garmisch
We leave Remagen after breakfast and travel by rail along the scenic Rhine Gorge, via Stuttgart and Munich, to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We check into our centrally-located hotel for a two night stay.

Day 5: Oberammergau Passion Play
Your morning is free to relax or explore the charming Bavarian town of Garmisch before the afternoon brings one of the main highlights of our tour: the world famous Passion Play. We transfer to the village of Oberammergau, the setting for the Passion Play for the last 376 years, where we enjoy lunch before the five hour epic perfromance begins. Dinner is served during the interval in a local restaurant, before enjoying the final and dramatic part of the Passion Play. In the evening we are transferred back to our hotel in Garmisch.

Day 6: Nuremberg
After a leisurely breakfast, we leave Garmisch by rail for Nuremberg, travelling via Munich. The afternoon is free to explore this ancient city, with its beautiful Gothic churches and half-timbered houses, and to settle into our comfortable and well-located hotel, our base for two nights.

Day 7: The Romantic Road
Today we enjoy a full day excursion by coach along Germany's famous 'Romantic Road', an ancient trade route during the Middle Ages retaining much of its medieval character. The road winds through some of the country's most picturesque and enchanting destinations, including medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber and the fairytale town of Dinkelsbühl.

Day 8: Nuremberg to London
We catch a morning train from Nuremberg to Frankfurt, then on to Brussels to join our Eurostar to St Pancras.

Your Hotels
Conveniently situated close to the railway station in Remagen and just a short stroll from the town centre and the Rhine, the 3* Hotel Pinger is a real local institution - the Pinger family have been running hotels in the area since 1938. All 47 en suite rooms have colour TV and telephone. The hotel has a lift, traditional-style restaurant, coffee shop, bar with beer garden, lounge, a small indoor pool and sauna.

In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, we stay in either the 3* Vier Jahreszeiten or the 4* Hotel Rheinischer Hof. Both hotels offer a warm welcome and a taste of traditional Bavarian hospitality, in a convenient location for exploring the city.

The 4* NH Nuremberg City is located footsteps away from the railway station and close to the city's main attractions. With excellent facilities and comfortable, well-appointed rooms, the NH City is a fantastic base for our two-night stay here.
