Day 1: London to Brussels
We leave St Pancras International by Eurostar on an early afternoon departure bound for Brussels and our overnight stay at the 4* Crowne Plaza Hotel. This evening is a good opportunity to explore the Grand Place or the city’s Christmas Market.
Day 2: Brussels to Hahnenklee
We set off this morning on the service over the border into Germany, travelling via Cologne and Hanover to Goslar. At Goslar we are picked up and transferred to Hahnenklee, high above Goslar, set in the snow-capped Harz Mountains and surrounded by lush forests of spruce.We check into our hotel the 3* superior Ramada Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. Day 3: Christmas Eve in Goslar
On Christmas Eve we embark upon an excursion to Goslar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with many historic buildings, majestic churches and a charming Christmas Market. The Kaiserpfalz Imperial Palace, the oldest surviving Romanesque palace in Germany, is certainly worth a visit, as is the gothic Town Hall. In the afternoon we taste German specialities with coffee, gingerbread and Stollen cake in the hotel. This evening we celebrate with dinner before setting off on a torch lit walk with mulled wine. Day 4: Christmas Day at leisure
After a leisurely morning and Christmas Day lunch, the afternoon is free to explore Hahnenklee.Why not take a walk through the forests up Bocksberg Mountain for views over the surrounding area? Alternatively, those feeling less energetic can take a trip into the mountains by cable car and relax in the restaurant at the summit with a hot drink. (B,L,D)
Day 5: Boxing Day on the Harz Railway
On Boxing Day we enjoy a day trip on the Harz narrow-gauge railway, which carries us past dramatic mountain ranges and through wooded valleys on a journey into the heart of the spectacular Harz area. We travel by coach to Wernigerode, a charming town complete with a hilltop Gothic castle and a myriad of half-timbered buildings, where we pick up the vintage train which steams through the Harz National Park to Eisfelder Talmühle, from where we return to Hahnenklee. Day 6: Free day in Hahnenklee
Today is at leisure to relax and enjoy the hotel’s facilities, or further explore the outstanding scenery of the area. (B,D)
Day 7: Homeward bound
We are picked up from our hotel and transferred to Goslar, where we catch our onward service via Cologne and Hanover to Brussels. We change here to the Eurostar which whisks us back to St Pancras International. (B)
