Day 1: London to Remagen
We leave St Pancras International by Eurostar this morning for Brussels, where we join our high-speed service to Cologne. Here we change to a local train and head south along the banks of the Rhine to Remagen and transfer to the 3* Hotel Pinger for a five night stay. (D)
Day 2: The Ahr Valley
Our excursion today is by rail to picturesque Ahrweiler, situated at the heart of the winegrowing region and dating back to Roman times. There is time to explore the medieval walled city, with its battlements and half-timbered houses,before moving on to Mayschoss for a tasting of some of the wines for which the area is justly famous. The Ahr Valley is known for its red wines and is set amidst a large region famed for white wine varieties. (B,D)
Day 3: The Vulkan Express on New Year's Eve
Our optional excursion on New Year’s Eve is a nostalgic journey on the Vulkan Express, a privately owned narrow-gauge diesel train which winds its way up from the floor of the Rhine Valley from riverside Brohl to Engeln, deep in the majestic Eifel Mountains. Opened in 1901, the 11 mile (18km) journey passes by dramatic castles and travels through beautiful scenery climbing 1,310 feet (400m).We arrive back in plenty of time to prepare for our five-course themed gala dinner at the hotel, interspersed with live music, dancing, fireworks and bubbly at midnight. Day 4: Exploring Remagen on New Year's Day
We enjoy a refreshing walk today through Remagen, exploring the town's history and traditions with our local guide. The afternoon is free, you may like to take a stroll along the banks of the Rhine and admire the rugged beauty of the landscape. Alternatively, our hotelier, Mr Pinger, can offer advice on one of the many well-signed walks possible from Remagen. (B,D)
Day 5: River Cruise to St Goarshausen
Our excursion today takes us first by rail to the charming 2,000-year-old riverside town of Boppard. Here we have some free time to explore, before cruising up the Rhine to the picturesque medieval village of St Goarshausen. Originally just a handful of fishermen's cottages, St Goarshausen is a picture-postcard riverside town with the splendid Burg Katz castle providing a scenic backdrop high up on the wooded hill behind. We return by rail via Koblenz. (B,D)
Day 6: Remagen to London
We leave Remagen by local train travelling north to Cologne, where we join the high-speed service through to Brussels. Here we change for our Eurostar service to St Pancras International, arriving in London in the late afternoon. (B)
