Day 1: London to Gengenbach
We set out on a morning Eurostar departure from St Pancras International to Paris, where we board the TGV to Strasbourg. We continue over the German border to Offenburg by regional train. Here we transfer by coach to the 4* Schwarzwald Hotel in Gengenbach. (D)
Day 2: Excursion to Strasbourg
Today we travel together to the medieval city of Strasbourg, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Cathédrale de Notre Dame soars above a huddle of medieval houses, dominating the skyline of the city and visible for miles around. After climbing several spiral staircases visitors find themselves on top of the cathedral, and from here the entire city can be seen, including the imposing European Parliament. For those who just wish to wander through the winding streets and narrow alleys to soak up the atmosphere, head for La Petite France, home to 16th and 17th century houses with incredibly intricate carved woodwork. Here you will find the distinctive Ponts Couverts, medieval bridges linked by watchtowers which were once covered by wooden shelters. (B,D)
Day 3: Free day Gengenbach
Today is free to explore Gengenbach at your own pace. Set in beautiful countryside with a rich historical and cultural heritage, the town is truly a ‘pearl among Black Forest towns’. Take a stroll around the Old Town to admire historical market squares, winding alleyways and beautiful half timbered houses, all with their own individual character and atmosphere. A good place to start is the Town Hall, a beautiful building dating from the 18th century. The mellow stone of the pink façade reflects the sunlight, and as the sun sets the square is bathed in a rosy glow. Alternatively, why not explore further afield using your supplied Konus Card, which gives visitors free or reduced travel on most routes in the Black Forest. Perhaps take a trip to Freiburg, a beautiful old city set in rolling countryside and encircled by vineyards. The Münster, Freiburg's Gothic cathedral, is one of the oldest and most beautiful in Europe, and visitors can climb to the top of the tower for fabulous views over the city. (B,D)
Day 4: Excursion to Lake Titisee
We travel by coach to Lake Titisee, set deep in the Black Forest and surrounded by lush woodland. The town of Titisee sits on the water’s edge, and is an ideal starting point for tranquil walks along the lakefront, or rambles into the surrounding forest. Alternatively, why not take an optional cruise out onto the glittering waters of the lake and admire the stunning scenery from a different perspective? We return this afternoon by train through the heart of the Black Forest, passing through verdant valleys dotted with traditional farmhouses and gurgling streams running down from the hills. (B,D)
Day 5: Gengenbach to London
We leave Gengenbach by coach for Offenburg, where we catch our regional service to Strasbourg. Here we join the high-speed TGV to Paris to connect to the Eurostar bound for St Pancras International. (B)
