Summer in the Moselle Valley

Summer in the Moselle Valley

Day 1: London to Cochem
We leave London in the morning by Eurostar from St Pancras International for Belgium. From Brussels we head through the Ardennes to Luxembourg, where we change to a local train bound for the Moselle Valley, and the delightful riverside town of Cochem. We check in to either the 4* Brixiade Hotel or the 4* Triton Hotel for a four night stay. (D)

Day 2: Exploring Cochem
Today starts with a guided walking tour of the delightful town of Cochem, which will help you to get your bearings. We then enjoy a wine tasting with a local producer to sample the wines which have drawn visitors to this beautiful corner of Germany for generations. The afternoon is then free for you to explore at your own pace. One place to visit is the castle, Cochem’s most famous landmark, perched on a striking hilltop high above the Moselle. The contour of the hill seems to be continued in the outline of the castle itself. Other places to see are the bustling old quarter, the timber-framed houses, the historical mustard mill and the market square with its baroque town hall. (B,D)

Day 3:Trier
It is the turn of another Moselle town today for our included excursion by train. Trier is considered the oldest city in Germany as it was founded over 2,000 years ago and has the longest history as a city. There is a wealth of well-preserved Roman and medieval buildings to discover including the Porta Nigra – one of the best preserved Roman gates anywhere in Europe - and a historical market square in front of the magnificent Cathedral, which  is also Germany’s oldest church. (B,D)

Day 4: Free day
Today is free for independent exploration. Why not take a cruise along the river, or visit nearby Koblenz, situated at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Moselle? The town was founded by the Romans as a trading post over 2,000 years ago and the cobbled streets and squares are full of sites and monuments. Some of the most interesting sights are the ‘Deutsches Eck’, or ‘German Corner’, the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial, Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and the Alte Burg castle. Alternatively, a scenic branch line known as the Moselle Wine Train leads from Bullay down to riverside Traben-Trarbach, whose twin villages span the Moselle beneath thick woods, vineyards and the ruins of the Grevenburg castle. (B)

Day 5: Cochem to London
We leave Cochem by local train for Cologne, where we join a high-speed service through to Brussels. Here we change for our Eurostar to St Pancras International. (B)

Your hotels
You will stay in either the 4* Brixiade Hotel or the 4* Triton Hotel. Both are located on the banks of the River Moselle, across the water from Cochem’s Old Town and castle.
