INCLUDED EXCURSIONS

Guided walking tour of Avignon

We have a guided walking tour of Avignon, which is dominated by the magnificent Palais des Papes which overlooks the town. This imposing building, with its echoing stone halls and extensive grounds, is the largest Gothic palace in Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, along with the neighbouring buildings flanking the lively Place du Palais. Take a stroll through the relaxing Doms gardens, admire the Romanesque Notre Dame des Doms Cathedral, and wander around the Musée du Petit Palais, with its lovely collection of Renaissance paintings. We also see the St Bénezet Bridge, made famous in the song ‘Sur le pont d’Avignon’, which was built in the 12th century. Only four of the initial 22 arches remain intact today.

Excursion to Arles and Nîmes

We travel to Arles by coach, where we enjoy a guided tour of the main sights. The Roman remains, including the baths and the theatre, are well preserved, and we see the impressive Amphitheatre, which offers a panoramic view of Arles from its top tier.We continue on to Nîmes this afternoon, which is also well-known for its Roman heritage and archaeological collections. The Old Town is a delightful mix of narrow streets, interesting museums and elegantly restored period houses. The local landscape and warm Provençal sun of Arles provided the inspiration for many of Van Gogh’s most famous works.

OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS

Provence tour

We can enjoy an optional full day coach tour into the lush hills of Provence, where fragrant lavender flourishes and the colourful landscape is dotted with timeless stone farmhouses. We head first for the unspoilt village of Les Baux de Provence, perched on a rocky pinnacle, before continuing along the road to St Remy de Provence, zigzagging through verdant forests, olive groves and vineyards. From here we travel along a Roman road bordered by plane trees to Gordes, a stunning village built in beige stone that glows orange in the setting sun. Enjoy the beautiful panoramas from the 12th century castle before we head home via the splendid ochre village, Roussillon. This town is built on cliffs ranging in colour from pale yellow to orange and red.
