Day 1: London to Annecy
We leave St Pancras International on a morning Eurostar service to Paris, then travel onwards by TGV to Annecy, where we check in to the 3* Best Western International for four nights. e enjoy inner in the hotel this evening. (D)
Day 2: Annecy
Today is free to explore Annecy, capital of the Haute-Savoie region, and nestled at the foot of breathtaking mountains on the northernmost tip of Lac d’Annecy. Take the time to wander along the picturesque lakeside or explore the narrow, winding lanes and absorb the magnificent architecture of the old city. Annecy is a lovely place to stroll around, with its pretty canals, arched bridges and medieval streets. There is plenty to discover, including the Palais de l'Isle, also called the "old prison", which was built in the 12th century. It is the symbol of the town and is among the most photographed monuments in France. The Château d'Annecy is also well worth a visit, standing out against the sky on top of a hill above the town. The castle gives incredible views over the town and the sparkling waters of the lake. Why not take the opportunity to join an optional boat trip to see the countryside from a different perspective? Day 3: Route des Grandes Alpes
Today we travel by coach along the majestic Route des Grandes Alpes, stopping at Evian-les-Bains, known throughout the world for its eponymous spring water. This appealing town, set on the shores of Lake Geneva, is a delight to wander around, with its shady promenade by the water. We continue on to Yvoire, an enchanting medieval town further round the lake. Take a stroll through the Old Town, with its narrow lanes and flower-bedecked houses, or walk through the gardens of the historic castle. We travel back through the soaring peaks of the surrounding mountains to Annecy. (B)
Day 4: Chamonix
Today we make our way by coach to Chamonix via the Col des Aravis, where we stop to admire the fantastic views over the snow-capped Alps. Chamonix nestles at the foot of Mont Blanc, with the mighty rock-face of the Aiguille du Midi towering over the town. You have time to explore the vibrant alpine resort and perhaps catch the Montenvers Railway, the funicular railway departing from Chamonix and climbing to an altitude of 6,276 feet (1,913m). Upon disembarking, you are greeted by truly stunning views of some of the most impressive peaks in the area. The station is positioned on a rocky ridge overlooking the Mer de Glace, the largest glacier in France, and visitors can descend onto the Mer de Glace by means of a small cable-car. We return to Annecy for a final dinner together in the hotel. (B,D)
Day 5: Homeward bound
We leave Annecy by high-speed TGV bound for Paris, where we change for the Eurostar to St Pancras International. (B)
