Toulouse, Bayonne & the Pyrenees

Day 1: London to Toulouse
We travel on a morning Eurostar from St Pancras to Paris then on by TGV to Toulouse, where we check into the 3* Mercure Toulouse St Georges for three nights.

Day 2:Toulouse – la “Ville Rose”
Our first day is at leisure in this vibrant city. Known as the Ville Rose because of its distinctive pink brick buildings, Toulouse has a charming historic centre and a wealth of impressive museums and attractions. The Romanesque St-Sernin Basilica or the elegant Place du Capitole are well worth a visit. Alternatively, a river cruise on the Garonne River is a lovely relaxing way of taking in the sights of this attractive city. (B)

Day 3: Albi
We travel by train today to delightful Albi. Set on the River Tarn, the town is steeped in the history of the religious wars between the Catholics and Cathars. The 13th century Ste Cécile Cathedral is one of the most remarkable Gothic cathedrals in Europe. Albi is also famous as Toulouse Lautrec’s birthplace and the Toulouse Lautrec Museum, housed in the beautifully preserved former bishop’s palace, contains a vast collection of his work. (B)

Day 4: Across the foothills of the Pyrenees
We leave Toulouse behind and take the train through the beautiful foothills of the Pyrenees. Sit back and relax as the colourful scenery unfolds before you. We arrive in the fascinating town of Bayonne, superbly located only a few miles from the Atlantic coast, yet close to the picturesque mountains. We stay for three nights at the 3* Best Western Grand Hotel and enjoy dinner together this evening. (B,D)

Day 5: Bayonne and Biarritz
A guided walking tour of Bayonne this morning provides a fascinating insight into the rich heritage of the Basque Country. We explore the delightful narrow streets of Petit Bayonne together and see the Gothic cathedral which towers over the streets of the old town. This afternoon we travel by coach to fashionable Biarritz, situated a few miles away on the Atlantic coast. Biarritz became a popular resort in Victorian times and its ocean vistas and sweeping promenade have been attracting visitors ever since. (B)

Day 6: Free day in Bayonne
Today we have free time to relax or to sightsee. Perhaps lesser known than its glamorous neighbour Biarritz, Bayonne is nevertheless a delight. The half timbered houses lining the River Nive are picturesque examples of traditional local architecture. Both the Musée Bonnat, home to some fine works of art, and the cultural Musée Basque are worth a visit. Alternatively you could join our optional excursion on La Rhune Mountain Railway. (B)

Day 7: Bayonne to London
We leave Bayonne by TGV bound for Paris and board the Eurostar for St Pancras International. (B)
